The Fingerprint and the Birthday Card

For my birthday, E.J. arranged a trip to the Cameron Highlands, where the Tea Plantations are, which is a four hour drive north of Kuala Lumpur.

But before we set off there we a few things to do... that we did not expect...

A Postal Adventure - The Fingerprint and the Birthday Card

The BOH Tea Plantations
Cameron Highlands, Malaysia
July 5th 2001

We went to the Boh Tea plantation to see how tea gets from the tea tree to the teacup.

That was exactly what we found. A fascinating experience.

The views, as you can see, are spectacular.

We learned that Tea was first discovered in China and it is the world's most popular drink. People drink it with different things in different countries and there are 2,172 cups of tea consumed in the world every SECOND!!!

Some countries drink it with fat and salt, others with curdled yak and goats milk. It was the English royalty who first championed drinking tea socially and way back then it was claimed to be able to heal all illness from headaches to gallstones!

We watched a video, as I'm sure you can tell!!

Then we went into the factory to see all the machine working away. Most of them were automated but there was people around all the same, mostly Indian.

After getting the opportunity to look around the factory and see the tea being made, we are even more amazed.

On the way up to the plantation we saw all the workers. What must they do after they finish work - they live on the plantation grounds in little huts and work out in the fields or in the factories.

All this just to allow us to have tea with our breakfast.

It was a Brit who in 1929 had a vision to create tea plantations in Malaysia - JA Russell and what a visionary he must have been to carve ou0t of the land these plantations, which would be over time worth Billions of dollars.

The tea packers get paid RM15 per 6 hours work, which is £3.00, or under $5.00 PER DAY!!!! They, on average, pack on average 270 packs a day.

We talked to two of them - an old Indian lady who was labeling - she has been doing the job for 20 YEARS and can label 500 each day - when she has reached her quota she can go home.so it's performance rewarded.

SEE MORE OF THE TEA PLANTATIONS HERE.

The other man was about 45, and he was also amazing.

He was putting the cellophane on the packs SO FAST,

I asked him about wrapping presents.he quickly leapt up and when and grabbed some silver foil.

He showed us how the tea was wrapped from start to finish, just like a neat little present.

He wrapped the foil around a block of wood and then packed the tea, he knew exactly the right amount to put in, just the right amount to tip out.

He did the final wrap and then put the two blocks on the weighing scale..exactly 100mg - we all gave him a round of applause, there were a few Germans on the tour too, and he was really happy.

When he went back to his seat he smiled at me and indicated that he couldn't hear or speak, I blew him a giant kiss and he smiled again.

It was a beautiful moment and experience to have had in my life.

We had a "cuppa", [a cup of tea] in the teashop and bought some teas to take to Australia.

We drove down from the mountains and are back to KL - without a map and any real idea of how to get to our house.

We have been taking taxis everywhere and don't really know where we are on the roads.

Tonight we are all having a night out to celebrate 3 birthdays: mine, Kathy's and Manmeet's.

We are going for a Chinese meal and then out dancing.

Tomorrow Vibodha does his final Seminar in KL for this round.

Sunday we are packing, and our flight leaves on Monday morning at 9.40am - we arrive in Perth at 3.00pm.

So I guess the next time you hear from us we will be in OZ!! See ya soon.

Living in Perth, Australia.
AUSTRALIA - 11th July 2001

Well, I was right. It is OZ.

Hi there, we are sitting in Nis's kitchen and E.J. has just got up from the table to make stuffed peppers. Gitam [Nis's lodger] is making cauliflower cheese...he's an amazing cook.

Nis is also helping with the meal. We are expecting Vistara to arrive any minute.

I, unlike the others, am sitting at the table typing this, being watched by Simon and Danica - Nis's kids - they are GREAT!

So as you can see we have arrived safely in Perth. Big News, we have today opened our first Australian Bank Account.

Settling into Australia
Wintertime, Perth, WA
Saturday the 28th of July 2001.

Well. Hmmm. What to tell you about the last few weeks or so.

It is winter here in Perth.

Although, really it's beautiful!!

I was worried about the weather, wondering HOW cold it was going to get... and the rain...

That should teach me not to worry.

It is gorgeous! Bright sunshine and cloudless skies (though people being the way they are, everyone is complaining of a drought!)

I am sitting in our living room with our projector on a big wall of the house, typing and getting some work finished. It's quite an experience working on a 5' by 4' (1m x .8m) screen.

Quite inspiring really.

Tila has just gone out to the Gym. She is working out regularly and keeping fit as a fiddle. I, on the other hand, have been known to sit here in front of the huge screen and write the day away...

Nothing else to report as of yet, except that we just received the tickets for the Money Mastery Seminar I will be giving on the 7th of August (a week, tuesday) and they look fantastic. (Now we have to stamp them all with the time and date.)
