Kuta, on the Island of Bali
Indonesia
Saturday,4th of March, 2000. |
We
have decided to stop in Bali.
Our initial impressions of Bali were
Hot. Raining occasionally, mostly at night. Good service. Good
food.
Good value.
Current note: Of
course, this was before the terrorist bombing of a Tourist Nightclub
in 2002.
The
club was in the town of Kuta (where we lodged), the hub of the
tourist industry here in Bali.

Kuta ~ Bali ~ Indonesia
The Island of Bali, the Volcano & Ancient Ruins Saturday
the 4th of March, 2000 |

It
is 15 Pounds Sterling a night to stay in this hotel. It's a bit more
than we have paid so far on our trip, but it is cheap for what we
are getting!! |
We
feel like we are on a package trip with room serve, mini bar, hotel
entertainment, air con, TV with in house movies, hot water, balcony
, 2 swimming pools, those bar stools which sit in the pool! etc.
In fact it would be quite cool for people to fly out to Bali cheaply
(Russell and Tash), and have a ball here! |
| You
can eat for about £2.00 per night for both of you. Amazing.
The people are really friendly and the Hotel is great. It's 500
meters from the beach, not that we have been there yet.
It's supposed to be beautiful, we will go there later today as this
is our second to last day here out of 6. |
| We
have tried to spend time updating the diary, but are finding it
is taking a lot of time.
We apologize in advance if it is not regularly updated, you are
in our minds though as we love to share these experiences and places
with you! |
At
the Hotel they provided an "Aussie BBQ" night with traditional
Bali dancing and a full banquet meal. You would have thought we
hadn't eaten in 2 months as we needed no second invite to go the
food. We were first there.
The Dancers were great, but a little spooky. If
you look closely at the photographs you will see how they bend their
fingers back into some strange contortions. |
| A
Traditional Bali Dance- well worth a sneak peak!
There area lot of hawkers here. They seem to be worse
than India. They sell their stuff so cheaply.
Apparently if you buy something from a street vendor
you should look at what they give before you leave them, as they
wrap it already and may not give you what you actually bought.
We did NOT have any
negative experiences of this kind. |
|
They show you the good stuff and have the crap stuff pre-wrapped.
Also a lot of the prices are quoted in $US to get your attention.
They say to come and look in their shop.
Unless you actually want to buy anything don't go in, as it is
really difficult to get yourself out.
They are very persistent salespeople and will resort to making
you feel bad if you don't buy. (Not all shops though). |
| We
took a tour of the Island. You can't do everything in one day. The
guide books tell you that driving is hazardous.
It didn't look hazardous to us, but you do need an International
drivers License, which we did not get before we left London.
You
can hire a car cheaply for about £5 - £7 per day. We
just decided to make up our own tour and it cost £16.00. They
do try and get you to eat lunch at a really up market restaurant.
We didn't and wandered around to find our own place!

Barong Hotel ~ Kuta
Beach ~ Bali ~
Saturday, 4th March 2000 |
| Today
we took a walk to Kuta Beach.
It is full of surfers, and the waves are really quite
high. I thought you might like to see some of the sites there.
There are still loads of Hawkers but they do take
NO for an answer. |
|
| The
roads where we are just outside the hotel have been flooded since
we got here. The rest of the roads aren't too bad, just these ones
for some reason, probably the condition of them!
The Island isn't as dirty as we thought it would be by the comments
from other travelers. Maybe the hotel we are staying in is clouding
our judgment.
We have enjoyed Bali very much. I will definitely come back and
do an amazing amount of SHOPPING some time in the future.
The wood carvings, furniture and statues/art are beautiful. Furnishing
a house in this style would look wonderful.
