Sneak Preview inside Lady Diana, The Princess of Wales'
Ancestoral Home - Althorpe

Lady Diana's Althorpe home is wonderful.

I can imagine what her life growing up must have been like.

She was definitily a British Aristocrat in her own right.
When you walk around inside the home you will notice that almost every piece of space on the walls are covered in paintings. These paintings are of the people of that time. The Spencer family dating back hundreds of years.

You can choose to have the "guided tour". This is a personal telephone you get which has a hi-tech system. It takes you through a pre-recorded commentary which starts and stops automatically as you enter and exit each room. Very impressive.

I was taking photos inside the house without worrying, posing myself and the camera...I got all these beautiful pictures BEFORE I was advised that I was not allowed to take photos inside the house.

SO YOU REALLY HAVE GOT A SNEAP PREVIEW!!

There were riches in many forms throughout Althorpe. It was wonderfully ornate, but I do have to say it did not have that "lived in" feel!!

Earl Spencer and his daughters do still live at Althorpe a lot of the time; but they have their own private quarters.

All the staff were very friendly and spoke very highly of their employer.

The paintings of Earl Spencer and his sister Diana are very poignant! This painting of Diana disappointed me. It was painted at one of her saddest times, around the time of the divorce from Charles. She looks despondant, which is not how I remember her!

The portrait of Earl Spencer shows him holding the famous "speech" he delivered at Diana's funeral which caused so much controvesy.

The Diana memorials and collections are displayed classically and there is so much to see. We thought looking around the house was the great part!!

After the tour of the house you can take a walk around to the lake in the rear gardens.

The remains of the late Princess Diana were laid to rest in a private service held at Althorpe.

Her remains lie buried on this island located in the man-made lake you see here.

The memorial has the most beautiful quotes carved there.

I did notice that she was "alone" on the Island. Many believe that she is now as alone in death as she was in life.

I feel that she is centred here and finally at peace.

Her death and funeral produced unprecedented expressions of public mourning, testifying to her enormous hold on the British national pysche. Her life, and death, polarized national feeling about the existing system of monarchy (and in a sense about the British identity), which appeared antiquated and unfeeling in a populist age of media celebrity in which Diana herself was a central figure.

This is the family church just a few minutes away from the Althopre Estate near Clayworth.

Her father is buried here along with many of her ancestral family.
