The Moat and Walls of Chiang Mai
(The Rose of the North)
Northern Thailand

Chiang Mai, the Rose of the North, has a moat.

A fairly big moat, as moats go. (see photo)

Really, how many cities do you know of that have a moat?

It's a beautiful addition to the modern city, planned by people hundreds of years ago.

On the inside of the moat, there is a wall. Quite a big one. The photo above was taken from on top of the wall.

The wall is old and encloses the old city with it's four sides. Chiang Mai has spread quite considerably, and now extends several times it's original size.

It takes about three and a half hours to walk all the way around the moat.

The walls vary from place to place around the city. Some areas are fully restored and brand new, while others are obviously ancient.

This is one side of the North Gate. It's brickwork is quite new and structured, unlike the North-East corner (above) where the slow erosion of time is allowed to take it's toll.

It is a very spectacular addition to the already amazing city. I would recommend a walk around the moat if ever you have a chance to visit Chiang Mai.

Tip: I would do it in the morning, it gets quite hot in the middle of the day!
