The Sankhampang Hot Springs
Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand

The Hot Springs are located about 37km outside Chiang Mai in Tambon Ban Sahakorn. They are well worth the trip!

Our new friends, Rolf and Karen, from Germany, and Vibodha and I headed up there for a relaxing morning.

We started with breakfast at Tuk’s and hoped on the bikes for the 40-minute ride. The journey itself is very picturesque with scenic views of mountains, paddy fields, and palm trees.

It is 10baht admission to the park, 25c, and there are many things to see and do. Swimming, walking around the exquisite gardens, Thai massage, natural geysers and eating eggs….more of that later!

This is Rolf and Karen.

We went straight for the swimming pool, which is like taking a warm bath. I dipped my toe in and it was so gorgeous I savored the moment before slowly sliding into the hot natural mineral water.

We had a wonderful long soak for over an hour. Our bodies felt refreshed and very relaxed. The sun was shining on one end of the water so we could sunbathe too!

We had a “natural massage” underneath the swimming pool’s waterfall. It felt great!

It was also great to get to know our new friends better. I am sure we will see them again either in Germany or Perth, they are great fun to be with.

After all that swimming you can get a bit hungry….which is where the EGGS come in…

Because the temperate of some of the pools is 80 – 90degrees, it is hot enough to boil an egg!

The stalls on the way in sell eggs in baskets and you hand your basket in the boiling water for as long as you want to. You can see the sign, which tells you the time you need for the results you want! The smell of Sulphur hang in the air, Rolf had to move upwind!

We had a picnic lunch, ate our eggs, fruit and nuts and relaxed.

We were the only Westerners there. We watched the local Thai families, usually large groups of around 10 or so, having fun and relaxing.

The small canals had very hot water in them; the Thais were sitting, standing and in some cases lying in them. It was fun to see. You can also camp here, I can imagine that would be a fun way to spend a night or so. Very natural surroundings and great to be out of the city for a while too.

E.J. [Vibodha] and I left around 2pm as I had a dentist appointment, and we had visited the gardens and geysers before on our first visit to the springs. Karen and Rolf stayed around for a walk.

Highly recommended for a visit.
