Glorious Buddha Temples

The intricate detailed artwork is so beautiful and the colours are inspiring. It takes your breath away!!

The Buddha Images are exquisite. You pray by sitting on your knees in front of the Buddha - you NEVER point your feet at a Buddha image - and you bow three times with your hands in the prayer position.

There are many statues of dragons and if you look closely you will see that the 5 upright dragons are being eaten by the one horizontal dragon...as you go up the dragon railing you will find this happens again and again.

Around 6 O'Clock if you visit the temples you are likely to hear monks chanting. We saw this at Chedi Luang, which is a temple and ruins from ancient times. The sounds of the chanting are divine. We listened at the back and sat in meditation.

This is one of the spectacular temples on Thae Phae Road, one of the main streets in Chiang Mai. The detail on these works of art is amazing.

This is one of the Temples that the King is Patron of. Inside there is a myriad of colour and inticate detailed sculpture and Buddha Images.

This is just one stone carving...if hundreds...and how long must that have taken to complete. This was also at the King's Temple.
This is an example of an ancient Chedi. Can you imagine that every 2 or 3 minutes, as you travel around by motorbike you will see one of these....This is such a spiritual place, no wonder people settle here!

This shows you were the monks will sit inside the temple. During celebration times the local people visit their temple and give gifts to the monks...this temple would have been filled with parcels and sometimes money strings!

The monks are so humble, while the locals walk around the temple they sit behind the Buddha images and eat together.

This is a strange site to see...it looks as if these temples have been around for years and years when in fact some of them are just being built now. In Chiang Mai they already have 98 temples inside the city limits and they still build more. When you look closely EVERY ONE of those colours in a small mosaic tile and is placed on in a specific pattern. You can see this is more detail in the photo below right.

The edges of the temple roofs usually have spires and dragons on them. Aren't they beautiful!!

This is Suan Dok Temple. It is situated near the west gate of the city. If you want to see more pictures of this place - click SUAN DOK.
