FROM CAROL ~HIS MOTHER IN LAW
E.J. : HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPECIAL SON-IN-LAW

Why are you SPECIAL?? Well first and foremost you are looking after our daughter. We love her very much and are pleased that you are doing such a good job!! You certainly are soulmates!! Please don’t ever let that change.

The second reason for you being special is that you have given us an extended family – we now have Ed, Dottie, Shawn and Tom (plus grandparents) to think about and care about.

We appreciate all you have done to let us experience things we would never have thought of (or even dreamt of): e.g.

1. Punting on the river in Cambridge
2. Visiting the Amish Country and Peddlar’s
Village
3. Being present at Fairford Airshow.
4. Staying in Raffles Hotel in Singapore********

Anyway we love you and hope you have a great 30th Birthday.

Carol xxoo [Mother in Law].

FROM HIS MOTHER
EJ has always hated birthday parties. I have photos of him crying at all his birthday celebrations from his first birthday to his 13th birthday. I think it was the stress of all the attention. He always cried when we sang "Happy Birthday". But maybe it was a control thing. For instance, when he attended the birthday party of a little boy down the street he ran home from the party crying, "They're jumping around and making noise! Nobody wanted to play the games! Nobody was listening to me!". Another time he was invited to stay for supper after Justin's birthday party and he came home crying (again), "They were having BEAR for dinner and they made me eat some and I thought I was going to throw up! So I ran home." It was actually venison (deer) that Mr. Kukura prepared for them, but EJ's fertile ears heard something completely different.

Memom always made cool theme cakes for his birthday - a Teddy bear cake for his first birthday, a Choo-choo cake for his second birthday, a Fire Truck cake, a Speed Racer Car cake, a GI Joe cake, a Spiderman cake, a Soccer Field cake -they were beautiful.

We always had lots of friends over - Sean Burns, Mike Hood, Jamie McNutt Jimmy Buccafuri, - perennial birthday attendees. We always had games planned, but inevitably it deteriorated into mass chaos! As I look back on it, I think it was the chemicals in the purple juice I served that made them all nuts!

Here's wishing you a happy 30th birthday! Don't cry! You're only 30 and you still have all your hair and all your teeth.

I'm proud of you, I love you and your Lovely Lisa and I wish you many, many more happy birthdays.

Love Mom

So what does EJ mean to us. Well to me he's Tom's big brother, what a lucky guy :). To Tom, EJ is the guy he's looked up to his whole life and now they look eye to eye.
A funny story about EJ........... While when I think of EJ, i think of a porkroll loving fool. Who loves porkroll so much that he will even beat up his little brother arguing over how to cook it.
Tom would like to share the story about the time that Dad got really mad at EJ and gathered all of his star wars figures and threatened to put them in the trash the next day. EJ being the mischievous and adventurous 12 yr. old planned to use his younger brother and plot a revolt against Dad. The 12 yr. old and 4 yr. old planned the revolt to happen after dad went to bed. And so the 2 boys woke up and ransacked the garbage bags and took all the figures back to the toychest in Ej's room. Tom can't remember if they got away with it, but he doesn't think he did. It just goes to show how attached EJ was to his star wars figures that he was even willing to risk the life of his little brother to save his toys. If that is not setting an example, what is....
Happy Birthday EJ!
Hope you have a great day. Love, Tom and Amanda
An excerpt from his friend Tim
Chink games, riding our
bikes into Philly, being your co-pilot when driving,
drink Trivial Pursuit, road trips, playing jokes on
Scott (his car)you name it. There are just so many
stories and great times that we have shared over the
years! Even though we don’t see each other often…I’m
sure that there are many more good times to come.

Happy Birthday EJ! Wish I could be there with you…
perhaps someday I will. I look forward to our next
adventure together.

Your friend always,
Tim

From our friend Zandra & her sons Alex and Samuel

EJ to us always brings warm memories.

EJ always has a smile, and is always there to help. I remember his extraordinary patience.... [Sat in a cold tack room with a can of beer, waiting patiently for hour upon hour for the foal that wasn't quite ready to come, but still with a smile.]

I remember the gentleness in his eye's as he played with Alex as a young baby, again with such patience.

The fun times, the relaxing times all bring back such warm memories.
So EJ to us is a warm caring, compassionate person with such patience, a quality that is quite a rarity nowadays.
So it’s such a thrill to wish such a special person a truly wonderful Birthday... may your day be as magical as you are!

With all our love, kisses and best wishes Zandra, Alex and Samuel xxx

From his niece Rachel [aged 11]

Rachel - Hi there EJ Happy Birthday! I hope that you get lots of pressies.

I would like to say a BIG THANKS for being such a great uncle.

One of the funniest times was when we were all driving up to see the waterfalls(i can't remember what they were called) and I was sick all over the car and we had to stop and buy me some new clothes.

By the way THANKS for the message puzzle.

From his sister in Law Catherine.

Happy Birthday darling brother in law it’s about time u reached thirty.

I would just like to cast your mind back to a lovely bright sunny day at Hampton Court Palace where u proceeded to take lots of fab shots of the statues, such was the concentration you didn’t realise that they were covered up - oops, such a good laugh I had that day.

Happy Birthday, Bye xxxxxxx

From his brother in Law Russell and girlfriend Tash.

Witty, charming, with a winning smile that can light up a room, the type of man women find irresistible and men admire.... but enough about me, we're here (not literally) to honour E.J..... a man .....some might say, a short man, oh yes - we've all seen the finger pointing from strangers as we accompany him down the street, the jibs, the name-calling and ridicule cast behind his back - but to Tash and I, he is a giant of a man (not literally).

I will admit that it's sometimes difficult to see beyond the baseball cap, the uncouth accent and oh... those way-too baggy short/sweatshirt combo's - but once you do - you will be in the presence of a human - not THAT dissimilar to you and I - if you cut E.J. - does he not bleed? (this isn't an open invitation - it was a rhetorical question) - if E.J. inhales beer - does he not fall over? (again...rhetorical).

Whenever I met E.J. obviously, like most people.... once I got over the fact that this wasn't one of Lisa's post-pubescent rebellions instead actually being a meaningful relationship.. and more so, when I learnt that he was going to be my brother-in-law - one word sticks in my head.... mortification....but after that I realised that this young man would be walking down life's paths with my sister - shoulder to shoulder (or upper arm) through thick and thin.

I am proud of their union and know that my sister will be cared for as they go.

E.J. is a fantastic guy - the soothing Ying to Lisa's raging Yang - she says potato and he says potatoe.

I know that wherever you are, you'll be having a great time and I hope that that this message from the two of us will, in a small way add to your day, but more importantly compensate for the lack of a present. Happy Birthday E.J.

Lots of love

Tash and Russ
