The Renovations Continue

The bedroom and bathroom colours were coming totether nicely.

The sink (vanity) and the tub still needed to be inserted (awaiting plumber).

Welcome to multi-tasking at its finest.

Walls

It took a while to decide on the colour of the sunset (west) wall. When painting a giant wall, you want to be SURE of the colour, after all. And, rather than paint it a solid colour, we decided a nice big circle would break the linearity of the space (ie: the house has a lot of lines and angles, but no curves.) This was one of my objectives in the beginning of the project - to break up the straight-ness of the apartment.

So away I went to the top of the scaffolding...

Downstairs
Downstairs still needed a bit of work. I didn't really consider the amount of time a thirty foot mural would take to complete! To see the whole process on one page click here: Mural Painting at Little Lefroy.
Laundry and Loo
Nothing had yet been done to colour the laundry room and small downstairs toilet (below). The cieling edges were a mess, but those were patched by master Vijan. All that was left was a colour choice (and someone to paint it!)

Our painter arrived from Sydney in the guise of Vistara's cousing Paul.

He didn't know he was going to be redecorating during his trip to Perth, yet here he is - the painter behind the 'Arabian Sun' laundry room.

Thanks Paul!

Kitchen in a Box

Meanwhile, the kitchen needed alot of attention. Vijan took care of cementing the remains of the back of the kitchen wall while we picked up the kitchen from IKEA.

Yes, the boxes sitting at the bottom of the stairs (below) are the kitchen, flat packed. They took almost an entire day to put together (and, of course, a few pieces were missing, aargh!)

But it was getting done, step by step by step by step by step...

Leonardo's Inspiration...

The painting crew was hard at work getting the mural(s) up to par. Danica (Art Student, Devon's babysitter, Nis's daughter) took days of her time to come and help create this giant art piece.

THANK YOU THANK YOU DANICA!!!!
I couldn't have done it without you.

Vijan and Tila also took the time to add their touches to the piece. Vijan's sky made the mural much more lifelike, thanks Vijan!

Even Devon had a paint brush and was ready to paint!

With frequent visits by friends, the renovation process was much more fun.

Insert IKEA Kitchen...

Step by step the kitchen came together.

Ikea furnuiture assembled, wall concreted, floor tiles laid from spare bits of tile, plumbing set... all that's left is to place it, set the counter top on, cut the holes & hook it all up.

The mural...
Pathway Completion and Irrigation System
The pathway still had to be completed. This job was left half-way through to make time for the interior, but now that the interior was almost complete, the pathway needed to be laid.

I also added reticulation (irrigation) pipes to all of the garden area for ease of watering.

One sentence doesn't accurately describe hours worth of pipe-laying!

Laundry and Loo
The 'Arabian Sun' laundry room was looking good, and the downstairs bathroom wall colours were mixed and painted.

Lighting

The lighting was hung and positioned...

And part of the path caved in when I dug a trench for outdoor lighting (AAARRRGHHH!)
Kitchen Creation

With the kitchen in place, the doors needed to be assembled and hung, along with the tiling.

The kitchen came out exactly as Tila had envisaged.

We drew up a computer plan (below left) which we included here to show you how we pictured it. The wrap-around counter-top in the corner was discarded to make room for the rest of the appliances.

Again, Paul Roe turned up to help me with tiling the kitchen (ANOTHER BIG THANKS PAUL!) while Hank the electrician wired up the appliances.
And slowly, tile by tile, door by door, the kitchen appeared.
Multi-Artist Mural Painting
The mural project was still in full swing, with all hands on deck.
Skirting Board Hero
I also owe Nisargam a big thank you. He came with his power saw and within an hour cut all the skirting boards to size (with the right angles) and placed them. I thought it would take me all day with a hand saw! Thanks Nis!!!
Glazier

The glass screen for the shower had worried me for weeks (ever since we visualised it) because no one had a clear idea of how we were going to affix it.

Of course, the glazier knew!

After that, it definitely needed a clean, and as you can see the pieces were finding their place!
Creating the Kitchen Island
Meanwhile, at Nisargam's workshop, our kitchen island was almost complete! He was crafting us an island out of a slab of Cape Lilac, with shelves for dishes and pots.
The All-Nighters
One or two all-nighters pushed the job closer to our target date (which was unrealistic to begin with).
The Lists

We were all having fun, including little Devon who by this time was an adept at climbing stairs.

He learned a lot including how to say the names of the tools; screwdriver, hammer, etc.

He even helped with the planning>>.

Luxury Bathroom

As the bathroom neared completion I took the opportunity (again, with Paul Roe) to tile the area between the shower and toilet (above right). This was not planned, however it made the difference between it looking OK and looking LUXURIOUS!
Skirting Boards and Final Wall

Vijan was everywhere. From painting the upstairs skirting boards white to painting the final wall (the face was only for fun), he was an invaluable asset to the project and his wisdom and expertise made ALL the difference.

Kitchen Tiling

I grouted the kitchen tiles (new skill - thanks Paul Roe!) which meant that the kitchen was nearly complete.
Multi Tasking Vijan

Super Vijan painted the doors, as well as planted the pathway garden (with the help of Naveena).

Is there anything this guy doesn't do?

Nope. He's great at everything!

Mural
Between other jobs I worked relentlessly on the mural, trying to get it complete before the end of the renovations. I figured if I wasn't done we could always paint it white (which I was determined NOT to do!)
Window Cleaning
Vijan cleaned the windows.
Kitchen Island & Kitchen Finishing
Nis helped me put the rest of the kitchen door handles on.

And then the kitchen island arrived...

The bathroom, finally completed, looked spectacular. Complete with a deep bath (for 2), spacious shower, bright and open, it is a bathroom built for royalty.

A final scout of the house found a few items left to be done, but those could be done another day...
