As we waited in line (three of the last four
to board) we met a very friendly man who was a marine Biologist.
He had been out on the morning cruise, saying that in the last 10 years
of studying these whales that this was the most they had ever seen.
He came on the afternoon cruise rather than returning to Perth as planned.
So, with that in mind, we hopped on the little dinghy that took us to
the bigger boat and were ready for the whales.
Seated in comparative luxury on the top deck of the boat with about 20
others, while about 40 people were below, we set off.
After
only ten minutes at sea the captain alerted us to our first sighting for
the day…a Southern Right Whale and her calf.
We get really close to them. She is massive!
I cannot believe the size of them. [a telephoto
lens would have been uesful here].
The whales have come all the way from Antarctica to here to give birth,
and then they will made their way back again.
The do this whole trip without food. They spend the feeding months preparation
for this task.
They
are amazing creatures. Look at me! I needed
a nap just to go out and watch them!
It was like looking back into the dinosaur era.
We continue to see more and more whales and even some playful dolphins!
The $45 trip was certainly worth it.
Cake, juice, fun, great information and hospitality all aboard the “Naturaliste
Charter”. A Globaltickit Recommendation.
Vibodha organized me and baby getting off the boat first, I felt like
royalty!!
Then
we made our way home, I slept in the car and we got back to Dunsborough
after 6pm.
We finished our day eating the delicious vegetarian chili I had made
the night before... not realizing just how appreciative we would be of
it!!
By for now.
