BUILDING A TEPEE
at Nisargam's
Spearwood (Near Fremantle) Western Australia

It all started one fine afternoon...

in the back garden...

The canvas was spread, the pegs were warming in the Australian sunshine...
Where once there was nothing but open grass, there would soon be a tepee towering above it all...

It'll be about this high...

They are measuring the circumference, making sure there was enough room...

The poles were set against eachother like so...

"How is this going to keep me warm," I can hear him thinking...

If I didn't know better, I would say he was consecrating the ground...

On goes the canvas...

Now it's looking like a tepee...

Here we go...

Almost there...

The two poles in the back are to hold the flaps (in the top of the tepee) open, and to adjust them when the wind shifts.

The flaps allow the wind to blow ACROSS the opening to pull the smoke (from the fire inside) away...

From inside you can see the opening at the top of the tepee where the smoke and heat escapes.

The opening (the door) of the tepee, from the inside.

And the outside.

Here you can see the front of the tepee.

The flaps are also controlled by two ropes reaching out in front of the tepee.

Inside the Tepee at Night...

The fire keeps the tepee (and it's inhabitants) very warm.

It's quite cozy really.

Siimon Plays the Digeridoo I have to say, this was a strange and inspiring experience... being in Australia in an American Indian Tepee - listening to a didgeridoo...
Our friend Inga, enjoying the heat of the tepee.
